Lund University Tests Satellite-Controlled Fertiliser for Efficient Farming

Lund University in Sweden is set to revolutionize agriculture with a new satellite-controlled fertiliser technology. This innovative AI-driven solution aims to reduce environmental impact and enhance farming efficiency at a lower cost.

Researchers at Lund University have developed this technology, which will be integrated into agricultural machinery and tested this year. The AI models will help in predicting harvests with high precision, even in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.

According to Alexandros Sopasakis, a Senior Lecturer at the Division of Computer Vision and Machine Learning at Lund University, "Knowing what to expect is a huge support for farmers in their planning. Data already indicates that 2025 risks being a tough year with drought, and knowing that now instead of in a few months can make a big difference. With AI, we are simply helping farmers to invest their resources correctly."

The technology will combine historical patterns, soil data, and weather forecasts to provide accurate predictions. This is particularly crucial as the climate and weather increasingly deviate from historical norms, making historical knowledge less valuable. Oskar Åström, a doctoral student at Lund University, explained, "In Sweden, we have a lot of data, such as soil samples and soil data, collected over many years and that are available for research. In many other countries, there is a large industry around agricultural data, and a lot of information is kept secret, which leads to reduced opportunities for open research."

The AI technology will also help in reducing unwanted runoff into the groundwater, preventing eutrophication. This is a significant environmental benefit, as traditional fertiliser application methods often lead to nutrient-rich runoff, which can harm water ecosystems.

By leveraging advanced decision support, farmers will be better equipped to make informed decisions about their crop management. The technology's ability to predict harvests as early as March and April with high precision will enable farmers to plan their resources more effectively.

This innovative approach not only promises to improve farming efficiency but also to contribute to sustainable agriculture. As the climate continues to change, such technological advancements will play a crucial role in ensuring food security and environmental sustainability.
