Siemens Recruits AI Expert from Amazon to Boost Data and AI Capabilities

ZURICH (Reuters) - Siemens (SIE.DE) has recruited Amazon (AMZN) executive Vasi Philomin to head its new data and artificial intelligence department. The move underscores Siemens' commitment to developing AI products and applications, such as its Industrial Copilot.

The recruitment of Philomin is part of Siemens' broader strategy to transition into a technology-focused company. AI and industrial software are seen as key areas for growth. In 2023, Siemens announced a partnership with Microsoft to leverage AI for enhancing productivity and human-machine collaboration across manufacturing, transportation, and healthcare.

The project involves creating AI copilots to assist staff in designing new products, organizing production, and maintaining operations. Philomin, with his extensive experience in machine learning and industrial-scale AI at Amazon, is expected to play a crucial role in advancing these initiatives.

Philomin will report to Peter Koerte, Siemens' managing board member and chief technology officer. Koerte expressed enthusiasm about Philomin's addition, stating, 'With his outstanding AI expertise and proven leadership, he will significantly contribute to expanding our data and AI capabilities.'
