Jayant Chaudhary Unveils India's AI Literacy Push with Free Courses and Teacher Training

Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary has outlined a comprehensive plan to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into India’s education system. The initiative aims to ensure that the next generation is not just AI-ready but also equipped with the ethical understanding of AI technologies.

Foundational AI Course for All

At the heart of the initiative is a foundational AI course titled ‘AI for Everyone, AI for All,’ targeted at students from Class 6 to 12. This course, set to launch on July 15, is being developed with the support of major tech firms and vetted by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). The course will cover essential AI concepts, ethics, and practical applications, ensuring students are well-prepared for the AI-driven future.

Teacher Training Modules

To support the AI curriculum, teacher training modules are being developed to help educators effectively deliver AI concepts. These modules will focus on pedagogical strategies, hands-on activities, and the integration of AI tools in the classroom. The goal is to empower teachers to foster a learning environment that encourages critical thinking and ethical considerations in AI.

Skill Hubs Initiative Expands

Over 30,000 schools have already joined the Skill Hubs initiative, which focuses on future skills like AI, IoT, and robotics. The upcoming pilot phase of the Skilling for AI Readiness Program will begin with Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) – residential schools that cater to students from economically weaker backgrounds. “When JNV students access AI learning, the multiplier effect will be tremendous,” Chaudhary noted.

Inclusion and Equity

Chaudhary emphasized that this rapid AI integration is not just about employment but also about equity. “These online resources and national programs ensure students in small towns and rural areas aren’t left behind. They’re resilient, innovative, and ready,” he said. The government is working with NCERT to integrate future skills into textbooks, while also expanding existing programs like 10,000 tinkering labs, now set to grow to 50,000 schools.

Platforms for AI Learning

Platforms like the Skill India Digital Hub and NASSCOM-MEITY’s FutureSkills Prime already offer AI courses for learners nationwide. These platforms provide a wide range of resources, from introductory courses to advanced training, ensuring that learners of all levels can access high-quality AI education.

A National Effort

Chaudhary had earlier suggested that India shouldn’t view AI as a disruptor for its young workforce but as an enhancer of productivity. The government’s efforts to integrate AI into the education system are part of a broader national strategy to position India as a leader in the global AI landscape.
