Apple Unveils Future Plans for Vision Pro, Vision AI, and Vision XR

Apple is not backing down from its visionOS journey. The company is plotting a long-term strategy to dominate the ambient computing market, with a range of visionOS-enabled products on the horizon. Analyst Ming Chi Kuo has shed light on Apple's roadmap, revealing plans for smart glasses, an affordable headset, and more.

Apple's Vision Pro, introduced with much fanfare, is set for a significant update. The device will transition to an M5 chip, enhancing its performance and capabilities. However, the next major release is scheduled for 2027, when Apple will introduce two new products: Apple Smart Glasses and Apple Vision Air.

Apple Smart Glasses

These sleek devices are almost like Macs you can wear like sunglasses. Available in multiple frames and materials, they will feature voice control, gesture recognition, and audio playback. A camera for video and photography will also be included, alongside advanced AI for environmental awareness. According to Kuo, Apple Smart Glasses are slated for release in Q2 2027.

Apple Vision Air

The Vision Air is the affordable alternative to the Vision Pro. It will be 40% lighter, made from plastic instead of glass, and equipped with fewer sensors. Powered by an A-series Apple Silicon chip, it is expected to be significantly cheaper than the Pro model but still offer a wide range of features. This device is likely to be the first visionOS product many consumers will consider purchasing, giving developers until 2027 to create compelling consumer-focused experiences.

Future Developments

In 2028, Apple plans to introduce the true second-generation Vision Pro. This updated version will feature a new design, reduced weight, and a lower price point, while continuing to use a powerful Mac processor. It is expected to appear in Apple Stores in the latter half of the year.

Additionally, Apple will launch XR Glasses in 2028. These devices will truly be the Macs you wear like sunglasses, integrating voice and gesture controls, a color display, and even more advanced AI. The company aims to release second-generation versions of these glasses a year or so later.
